SLC CONTACT INFORMATION

WELCOME!

Thank you for your interest in the Saca Community Learning Center. We operate programs of the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services in North Sacramento.

This new center - which opened in January 2005 - has been built from the ground up through the generosity and commitment of community members. Our goal at the center is to create better-educated adults, more capable parents, and happier healthier children.

The Programs We Offer

Adult Education

When it comes to Adult Education at the Saca Community Learning Center, we understand that most of our students have faced learning obstacles in the traditional educational environments. We also understand that many of the impediments to the learners are not simply of the academic nature; therefore we make it our goal to provide a unique environment that empowers and supports students in all their self-improvement endeavors. Our services are free to the community and open to adults over the age of eighteen. The educational services provided include Literacy, High school equivalency (GED) preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Computer Classes.
To access this service, no appointment is necessary. Come directly to the center and register for the classes that you would like to take. After registration, you will then take an assessment and schedule your weekly tutoring sessions. You should plan to come into the center at least twice a week to work on your studies.

PlayCare

PlayCare is a free service that provides childcare while parents are attending an educational or parenting program at Saca Community Learning Center. Its educational setting engages children and stimulates growth. The goal is to provide the parents with the opportunity to focus on their learning; knowing that their children are safe and being properly cared for. The typical day in the program includes a daily snack, art projects, group circle time, games, and a variety of other activities. All activities have been carefully designed to enhance the emotional, cognitive, and motor skill development of the children. PlayCare services are available for children who are at least one year and walking, and are not designed for children over the age of five. PlayCare is a service provided by Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services and is not a licensed childcare facility.
Hours of Operation

Mother Baby

The purpose of this program is to alleviate the basic immediate needs of children and parents who are disadvantaged. Services that are provided by the program stretch far beyond meeting just the physical needs of the children. The baby food, formula, and diapers are provided, but we offer so much more. Other services provided include: mentoring and emotional support, life and parenting skills, community service referrals, and expectant mother packages for pregnant mothers in their 8th or 9th month. In exchange for all of these services, the recipients are expected to attend monthly family life workshops. These workshops can range from family budgeting to proper discipline techniques. Clients will have the opportunity to be mentored one-on-one with a volunteer who will discuss the needs of the family and help them find and access the necessary resources in the community. PlayCare is provided for children during all of the family life workshops. The Mother-Baby Program receives no Federal or State funding and thrives solely on the generosity and commitment of our community.
To access this service, clients should bring their ID and proof of address along with medical cards or birth certificates for their children ages 0 to 24 months. Clients are able to use this service on a monthly basis as their need persists.

Family Homework Help

This program is is parents with children ages 5-18.Our goal is to provide one-on-one homework assistance to parents and their children who are in kindergarten through 12 th grade.  However, the program will not be a drop-off after school program.  This is a program that is designed to help the parents as well as the children.  We feel that by explaining an assignment, helping with a subject, and offering tutoring assistance that not only are the children receiving the help necessary to finish that one specific assignment, but that the parents are learning how to help their child the next time that there is a question.  We may be an example for the parents, off of which they can base their at-home tutoring, or we may simply be serving as a translator, explaining the homework assignment in Spanish, for example, for the parent, who now understands it, and can help their child complete it.  We may also be providing all of the tutoring help if the parents are not able to understand the topic or do not know enough English.  Either way the child is seeing that their parent cares about their homework, cares about their education, and cares whether he or she understands the assignment and is succeeding in school.

We will have fun and educational summer activities starting mid-June. Some specific requirements may change, please call for more information.
